कार्तिक मास में दो दिवाली के पर्व होते हैं. एक जिन्हें मनुष्य मनाता है और दूसरी दिवाली देवों द्वारा मनाई जाती है. दोनों की दिवाली को देशभर में बड़े धूमधाम के साथ मनाया जाता है. कार्तिक मास की अमावस्या को धरती पर दिवाली का पर्व मनाया जाता है. और कार्तिक पूर्णिमा के दिन स्वर्ग में देवताओं द्वारा दिवाली का पर्व मनाया जाता है. इस साल ये पर्व 7 नवंबर के दिन मनाया जाएगा. मान्यता है कि इस दिन देवी-देवता स्वर्ग से गंगा नदी में स्नान के लिए आते हैं. इसलिए वाराणसी के गंगा घाट को दीयों से जगमग कर दिया जाता है. इतना ही नहीं, इस दिन दीपदान का भी विशेष महत्व है. इसलिए लोग घरों में और घर के बाहर दीप जलाते हैं
